Your Behaviors Follow Your Beliefs. What You Think Matters.

Nov 23, 2021

Have you ever heard someone say, “I’ll believe it when I see it”? Often, we are waiting to “see” something to give us evidence that something is possible, or that something will happen in our lives. Maybe you are waiting for a certain financial status. Maybe you are waiting for a relationship to improve. Maybe you are waiting for something to improve with your health. The problem is, when you say, I’ll believe it when I see it, it will likely never happen.

The reason for this is because with this kind of mindset, you are telling your brain you don’t believe it will happen or that it is possible, and therefore, you think and act as though it is not possible. You tell yourself that only when you see evidence of it happening or of it being possible that you will believe it. When you do this, it results in you not consciously, or unconsciously, doing anything that would make it possible. You are resolved to the fact that it is not possible, and therefore do not spend any energy on creating the thing you say you want. Instead of saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it”, consider saying, “I’ll see it when I believe it”.

This may seem like a subtle shift; however, it is a very important one. You are telling yourself that you first need to believe in something, and then it will come to be. This does not mean that it magically appears, or that it comes immediately, however, when you shift your mindset and truly believe that something will happen or that something is possible, the way you think, feel, and act changes. For example, if you started believing that you could open your own business, you will start to think about the steps required to do this. You will start feeling excited about what you can do to create this. You will show up each day and act likely someone who started their own business.

If you believe that you can be healthier and in good shape, you will make decisions each day that are reflective of this. You will have exercise and healthy eating top of mind because you will believe that if you do these two things, you will in fact, be healthier and in good shape. If you believe you can be financially secure, you will stop spending money on things that are not important because you will show up and make spending decisions like someone who is financially secure. If you believe you are worthy of an amazing, loving relationship, you will show up everyday as someone who deserves love and who is confident in themselves. When you show up like this (versus waiting for someone or something to convince you that there is someone out there for you), you will attract different people into your life.

It is not about just thinking something will happen and then having it appear. When you believe that something can happen or is possible, you both show up differently, and see things differently. You may see opportunities that you otherwise would not have seen because you may have not realized they were meant for you because you did not believe something was possible. You may put in effort you would not have otherwise because you now believe that the effort is worth it. You may talk to others and share what it is you are trying to do, and get help or make connections you would have otherwise not made, because others did not know what you were trying to create.

If there is something you want but you do not yet believe it, do the following activity everyday until you believe it, no matter what.

  • Write down what it is that you want to believe.

  • Write down why you want to believe it?

  • Write down how you would think and feel about yourself if this was true.

  • Write down how you would act if this was true. How would you show up every day?

  • Write down at least 3 reasons why this is possible for you.

  • Repeat daily.

When I say “repeat daily”, I highly recommend that you write out this activity every day. Yes…good old pen and paper. While reading it with feeling everyday will help, there is something more powerful that happens in your brain when you write out the words over and over. Your brain does what you tell it to do. When you do this exercise, you are telling your brain to focus on making your belief a reality. The more you tell it, and the more emotion you attach to it, the more it is listening and working for you.

Give it a try. Stay consistent. See what is possible.
